We picked a beautiful sunny afternoon to visit this museum, located down at the waterfront. A great stop after enjoying a walk on the lovely restored; High Line. This is a 1.45 mile walk on the 🛤 old above ground railway in NYC.
Now turned into a park to walk along, relax and enjoy great views of the city!
About The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
The Intrepid Museum Complex, consists of the renowned Aircraft Carrier; ⚓ Intrepid. This site also includes a prototype display of the 🚀 Space Shuttle Enterprise. As well, you can climb aboard and view a guided missile submarine – The USS Growler.
There are museum displays on the carriers main deck as well as some historic fighter jets, and even an Air France Super Sonic Jet, on display on the top outer deck.
The focus of this massive museum complex is;
“New York City’s Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Complex is an educational and cultural non-profit institution centered on the aircraft carrier Intrepid. Aircraft Carrier USS Intrepid Museum
Officially launched in 1943, the aircraft carrier {Intrepid}, was very active in World War II. During this period, it survived; 5 Japanese kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike.
In addition to its service during the Second World War, the Intrepid saw active duty during the; Cold War and Vietnam War.
One of its more historical moments was proudly serving as a ⚓ NASA recovery vessel in the 1960’s. It met and recovered the 🧑 astronauts from the sea, returning from space.
During its tenure, at least fifty thousand men served on board, with just over 270 men having made the ultimate sacrifice.

In addition to the Intrepid, you also get to board the ⚓ USS Growler. This is a; Grayback Class Submarine, that carried nuclear missiles on board during the {Nuclear Missile Crisis} in the 1960’s.
Step down into this claustrophobic old submarine, and get a feel of what it must have been like for these brave seamen. Incredible how these men endured months under the sea, in these cramped quarters.
Your tour guide will walk you through each of the subs separate compartments, and he or she will explain its history along the way, of this once top-secret missile carrying submarine.
