Be Sure To Purchase Travel Medical Insurance

Travel Medical Insurance

This is something I’ve always preached to everyone for years. The cost is minimal compared, to what it may be, if you travel without insurance and do need medical attention during your trip. I’ve always said …

β€œIf you can afford to travel, you can afford travel medical insurance.”

If your health is good and you have no recent health issues, or not taking any new prescribed medication within the last 6 months, travel medical insurance is relatively inexpensive.

With no outlying or prior medical issues, the cost is minimal. If you travel more than once a year, you can save even more, by purchasing an {annual policy}, with a certain number of days allowed for each trip.

Tips For Traveling Abroad

Do Not Travel Without βš• Travel Medical Insurance βš•
Unless you can afford thousands of dollars for πŸ₯ medical treatment and other related expenses, traveling without proper travel medical coverage, could be a costly mistake.

Why so many people choose to take a chance and not purchase travel medical insurance, just for the sake of saving a few dollars, still puzzles me.
I have always said …

“If you can afford to travel, you can afford travel medical insurance!”

Don’t leave home without it!

First Night Accommodation

One of the many things we’ve learned over the years traveling abroad, is by having not, arranging at least your first nights accommodation.

For example, you’ve just come off a very tiring ✈ long haul flight in economy class. You’re exhausted, and there’s a significant time change you have to deal with as well. The last thing you want to do, is start hunting for a place to stay for your first night.

Especially if it’s in the middle of the night!

On our trip to India a few seasons back, I pre-arranged our accommodation upon arrival in {New Delhi}, prior to leaving on our journey, back home in Canada. I booked using Airbnb and even arranged for the owner to pick us up on arrival at the airport, for a small extra fee.

We arrived at 3 am local time, after a 13 Β½ non stop flight from Vancouver, exhausted! It was great to see our host greet us at the airport and take us to his home for the night, on our arrival.

Just another tip and great way of traveling safely abroad for the first time!

❓ Do You Need Any Vaccinations ❓

Protect yourself from disease or any other precautions, that may be necessary when traveling to your destination.

Certain βš• vaccinations may be required and/or recommended, depending where you are traveling to. The last thing you want, is to become seriously ill while away, because of neglecting to take necessary precautions against diseases.

Your local pharmacist and/or travel professional, can easily find out what shots may be required, to enter a country.

Tips For Traveling Abroad

Be sure to check out my post here on πŸ“–Β Vaccinations BeforeΒ Traveling Abroad – Guide πŸ“–

My article gives more information in greater detail, on specific travel related diseases. πŸ’‰ It lists immunizations recommended or that may even be necessary, to enter certain countries.

Even though most countries no longer require πŸ’‰ Covid-19 Immunizations for International Travel, it’s still wise to check on any restrictions in place, before traveling.

❓Are All Your Necessary Travel Documents In Order❓

travel documents

Make sure all of your πŸ›‚ travel documents are; valid, safe and secure with you at all times. Do Not pack; πŸ’΅ money, wallets, passports and other valuables in your checked 🧳 luggage!

Helpful Tips Banner

I always scan and/or take photos with my cellphone of my important documents and πŸ“§ email them to me. I also copy them on to a memory stick, in case they become lost or stolen.

This will help you greatly, especially if traveling to a foreign country and go missing! 🀞

This was the case a few years ago with a family member, who unfortunately lost his passport in a taxi while traveling abroad. Luckily, he had a scanned πŸ“Έ photo of his passport in his email documents, and was able to receive a fairly quick replacement, from the local embassy in the country he was visiting.

Without this, it would have been a real problem!

Always Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

Take a moment and look around your surroundings and always; Trust Your Instincts. If you feel unsafe in a particular area, then you probably are.

Leave as quickly and safely as you can, especially when traveling solo!

Travel Safely

Many people simply forget to look around them, and see what’s going on. Always take a minute and look around you, to be sure your surroundings are safe and you feel secure. This especially the case, when you’re traveling in a new and unfamiliar foreign destination.

Traveling Safely Abroad Includes – Good Judgement

Travel in Groups

Traveling in a Group

Try not to be caught alone in unfamiliar areas where you really shouldn’t be, especially at night. If you’re on vacation, this is when you’re usually most vulnerable.

Having a good time while on vacation, is normally when we tend to let loose and let our guard down at certain times. This is usually when we least think of our own personal safety, because we’re on vacation! πŸ™

Travel Safety Includes Watching Your Liquor Consumption

Tropical Drinks

We also may tend to over indulge in 🍹 alcoholic beverages while enjoying our vacation and unfortunately, this is when many tourists are at most risk with πŸ•΅ criminals.

Criminals especially prey on visitors at bars and nightclubs. Of course, it’s all part of enjoying ones holiday, but try never to let your guard down or make decisions you may regret later.

Be Aware Of Your Wallet & Handbag Always

Pickpocket Theives

Men should never carry their wallets in their back pockets. It still amazes me to this day, to see men with their wallets carried in this manner when traveling.

They’re just asking to be a victim of pick pocketing!

Women should keep πŸ‘œ purses tight against them at all times.Β This is especially true in crowds such as at busy; ✈ airports, πŸš‰ train stations and other high traffic areas.

It’s always good to make sure you travel with a purse that zips tightly, and has no open pockets. πŸ•΅ Criminals always prey on the unprepared!

Try To Leave That Expensive Jewelry At Home

Expensive Jewellery

Expensive πŸ’ jewelry definitely draws attention to undesirables out there. It definitely makes tourists a target. In fact, in one country we were traveling to recently, a local guide told us about thieves actually pulling gold earrings right off of women’s ears!

Yikes!! πŸ™

It’s also a good idea to go through your wallets, before leaving home. Empty out extra πŸ’³ credit cards, identification and other unnecessary items, that you really don’t need when away from home.

No sense in taking the chance of losing items that you really didn’t need anyway.

Exchanging Money

Tips For Traveling Abroad

This is debatable and depending on where you’re traveling to, but we’ve always found the best option for exchanging currency is at your chosen destination.

We try to use a local bank ATM whenever possible. Depending on the bank you use at home, many have {reciprocal agreements} with other banks around the world. Using their ATM, you’re not charged any transaction fees. Check with your local bank, and see if they do have agreements with other banks around the world.

I do not recommend using money exchange booths at airports or elsewhere, unless you absolutely have to.

Watch What You Eat & What You Drink

Food Truck

To avoid 🀒 sickness and health related ailments while away, it’s important to be aware of what you’re eating and drinking at all times.

Never drink 🚱 tap water when visiting a new foreign destination. This is one other very important tip for traveling safely abroad and to think of at all times. If not, you’re just asking for unnecessary illness, that could easily be prevented.

Also, be careful of 🍀 food stands and street vendors. As tempting as they may be, many travelers become ill from eating at – questionable food stands. You certainly don’t want your holiday ruined from eating or drinking something, you probably knew you should have avoided in the first place.

The last thing we all don’t want when traveling, is to find ourselves constantly running to the …

Always Carry An Extra Pair Of Prescription Eye Wear

anthony bourdain wearing sunglasses

For those who wear πŸ‘“ prescription eyeglasses like myself, always take an extra pair in case your original is lost or broken.

I was caught many years ago without an extra pair of glasses, while traveling abroad. I somehow misplaced them and being near sighted, I was left struggling to see in the distance, for the remainder of the trip.

A hard lesson learned, but never to be forgotten again! 😎

Respect The Local Culture

Chinatown Victoria BC

This is something I can’t stress enough when traveling anywhere in the world. Be sure to respect the local culture and customs of the country and people you are visiting. Try to interact and experience with the local people as much as you can. Get a feel what life is like in this new foreign country you are visiting.

Always be respectful and never judge or compare to what you may expect at home. Take things as they are, enjoy where you are and you will have a wonderful experience abroad.

The locals will be warm, welcoming and eager to interact with you most of the time. They are as curious about your way of life, as you are with theirs.

Emergency Contacts

Cadiz Spain

Make a point of sending out our travel itinerary to at least one family member if you can. It’s also wise to record the ☎ number of your local embassy in the country or next closest to. Just in case of emergency, or you run into any unexpected problems.

With the ease of the internet and wi-fi these days, it’s always good to stay in touch with family or friends as well.

Final Thoughts Banner

These are just a few travel and health safety tips to think about the next time you hit the road and/or, for traveling safely abroad. It doesn’t take much effort to help prevent; illness and unsafe travel.

I have also added a couple of excellent downloadable documents, that deal with safe travels. Some very usefulΒ  advice for most everyone and can be downloaded safely, directly from my post here.

Update
COVID-19 TRAVEL update

Now that most International Borders have reopened to visitors once again. Let’s all do our part and be sure to continue to adhere to safe travel protocols, that may still be in place.

Travel Insurance

Always check that you have proper travel insurance in place that will protect you and your loved ones at all times. As well, you may wish to include: trip cancellation, trip interruption, and other travel insurance options available to you.

On our vacation to 🏝 Cuba a couple of seasons ago, we added extra {Covid Protection Insurance}, for a small extra surcharge. This extra policy would cover us for additional living expenses, should one of us test positive before returning home.

We’ve interacted and met with some wonderful people while traveling, with locals and other travelers along the way. Go with an open mind, don’t compare to what you have at home, interact with the locals, and experience all that you can while you are away.

Travel and especially traveling safely abroad, will fill you with experiences and memories that will last a lifetime!
