Are You a Tourist or Are You The Traveler Type?

I recently came across this interesting Are You a Tourist or Traveler comparison chart that I thought was worth passing on to you.  It really made me think about just what kind of traveler am I really?  Have you ever taken a moment to think about what you like about traveling and just how or how not adventurous you really are?

I know that as the years go by and I get older, I am certainly not as adventurous as I used to be, which I think is only normal for most?  Today, I certainly like the creature comforts of traveling, so much more than what I was used to many years ago when traveling on tight budget.

At the same time, I also like to venture out into the unknown and explore the local culture and the cuisine of the people and countries I visit.

How about you?

Tourist or Traveler – Observes or Experiences

Observer With Binoculars

Are you the type of person that takes things safe and books those cruise ship tours and such, or do you like to venture off in new places in search of the unknown?  Are you an observer, or do you actually get in there and experience the local culture in the country you are visiting?

For me, I like to do both depending on where I am visiting and what type of travel holiday I am also taking. I like to think of myself as the Anthony Bourdain wanna be. I think that man has the greatest job in the world, traveling to exotic locations around the world, meeting the locals and feasting on their traditional cuisine.

How great is that! 🙂

Tourist or Traveler – Sticks Out or Blends In

India Children

Do you look like a typical tourist on holiday or do you take the time and effort to seek out local establishments, new places and actually talk to and become friends with the locals?  As the phrase went in the hit Star Trek television series   … Do you;

“Boldly Go Where No Man Has Gone Before?”

Tourist or Traveler – Complains or Just Curious

People Complaining

I think this is the one thing that truly annoys me with people who travel abroad.  Why is it that they continue to complain and compare to what they would expect to receive at home?  People, you are visiting a foreign country and should expect to receive what is normal for their custom.  Enjoy and experience the local culture and customs in the country you have traveled to.

After all, isn’t that why we travel in the first place?

I love this chart!  It really does show what type of traveler you really are.  Do you  enjoy and experience the new country you are visiting or do you find yourself complaining about too much and not really taking the time to actually smell the roses?

Grab a piece of paper and compare for yourself! 🙂

Do you take the time and immerse yourself in the overall experience when traveling, or do you just look but no touch?  Travel is exciting!  Get out there and Look, See and Hear what is around you!

Tourist or Traveler – Result or Goal Oriented

Diving Solitary Rock Zihuatanejo

Again, do you vacation with a certain goal in mind or are you adventurous?  For me, it can work both ways. Certain vacations I do just want to veg on the beach, soak up the sun and melt my troubles of daily life away!  Other holidays, I want to get out and explore!

I want to seek out new and exciting sites and attractions and immerse myself in the local culture.

Tourist or Traveler – Souvenir or Treasure

unique holiday gift

Are you the type of person that will visit a country, enter a typical tourist trap gift shop and purchase that souvenir trinket, or do you search for that authentic and unique keepsake that is made in the actual country you are visiting?

How many times for example, have you entered a gift shop in Mexico, looked at the back of the trinket to only find that it was mass produced in China?

To wrap things up with two final and very important travel tips to carry with you …

Tourist or Traveler – Be Respectful

Varanasi India Local

Always, always, always respect the people and culture of those whose country you are visiting. You are a visitor and should act accordingly. Be patient and enjoy the experience! If you catch yourself getting anxious, upset or losing your patience, take a moment to breath, relax and just think about why you traveled to this location in the first place! 🙂

Tourist or Traveler – Be Yourself

At the same time, be proud of who you are and where you come from.  Share your home experiences and culture with others.  People are interested in your cultural traditions and want to hear all about your native land as well!
