Historic Red Fort Images- A World Heritage Site
The Red Fort is situated at the edge of the Yamuna River in Delhi, also known as Old Delhi. This is without a doubt, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city. This historic Fort dates as far back as 1638, when it was constructed as the official residence and palace of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.
It remained as an official palace for two hundred years!
Built of red sandstone, its massive walls surround the Fort for two kilometers reaching 33 meters in height in certain areas. A very impressive site to see as you walk towards the main entrance of the Fort. During its period as a reigning Fort and Palace, there was once a huge ten meter deep moat surrounding the walls of the of this massive structure at that time!

Visiting this Fort was certainly a great way to start off our 3 night stay in New Delhi, before heading by train to our next destination in India … the Holy City of Varanasi. Be sure check my recent post on How to Spend 3 Days in New Delhi, with more suggestions and what we saw and did during our short stay in the city.

There is so much to see and do in Delhi, and if you only have a few days to visit, then I do recommend having a plan of where and what you would like to see beforehand. Getting around is easy and affordable, either by way of tuk tuk taxi or regular air conditioned auto taxi.
Below, I have listed the official UNESCO website page of the Red Fort, where you learn more about the history and see more photographs of this historical site.
